Pakistan Monsoon Rains Cause Urban Flooding and Casualties

A new spell of heavy rains has triggered Pakistan monsoon urban flooding, disrupting daily life and causing casualties across several regions. Major cities faced power outages, overflowing drains, and waterlogging in low-lying areas.

Light rain fell in Lahore, while Murree experienced heavy downpours. In Azad Kashmir, torrential rain in Mirpur and Bagh increased the risk of flash floods in streams and seasonal nullahs. Abbottabad, Narowal, Ferozewala, and Bahawalnagar also reported intense showers, leaving neighborhoods submerged.

Casualties and Power Outages
The rainfall caused multiple power feeders to trip, cutting electricity in many areas. In Lahore’s Kahna, lightning killed two people. In Ferozewala, a roof collapse killed a woman and injured three others.

Flood Alerts Across Provinces
The Meteorological Department warned of more rain until September 2. Punjab, Sindh, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, and Balochistan are expected to face further downpours. Authorities raised alarms about worsening conditions in the Ravi, Sutlej, and Chenab rivers.

The National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) issued urban flood alerts for major cities. At Head Balloki on the Ravi River, discharge reached 192,545 cusecs, while levels at Head Sidhnai also rose. Relief came at Shahdara Lahore and Jassar, where water levels eased. On the Chenab River, however, rising flows at Head Panjnad created fresh concerns for downstream communities.

The Pakistan monsoon urban flooding emergency highlights the growing risks of extreme weather, as heavy rains continue to threaten lives, infrastructure, and agriculture.
