Heavy Rains Affect Workers across Karachi, leaving thousands of daily wage earners without income. Flooded streets and disrupted businesses forced many labourers to return home empty-handed on Tuesday.
Markets and Businesses Disrupted
Initially, shops opened, but Karachi flooding on main roads forced shopkeepers to close early. Customers stayed away, further impacting earnings. Jamal Sehti, Patron-in-Chief of All Karachi Traders Alliance, highlighted major markets affected, including Liaquatabad, M.A. Jinnah Road, Saddar, Karimabad, Landhi, Korangi, and the Old City.
“Daily wage earners suffer the most in such conditions. Many labourers could not find work, and if rains continue, their financial woes will worsen,” Sehti said, urging support for workers during crises.
Residents Struggle to Make Ends Meet
Sehar Tariq from Punjab Colony, who sells household items, explained the struggle:
“We earn between Rs500 to Rs1,500 a day. Missing even a single day’s work pushes us into debt.”
Delivery riders were also affected. Adnan Ahmed, a food delivery worker, said restaurants remained closed and flooded streets drastically reduced orders, leaving him without income.
Construction Labourers Hit Hard
Haji Tasleem, manager of a construction workforce, explained that most laborers in Karachi come from other regions of the country and rely on daily work in construction. Heavy rains threaten their already fragile livelihoods.
This situation highlights how heavy rains affect workers across Karachi, emphasizing the need for effective support systems and disaster preparedness for daily wage earners. For more updates, follow nomiBlog.
