Forecast of Intense Rainfall
The National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) has issued a fresh flood warning after forecasts of heavy rainfall between September 1 and 3. The authority expects water levels in eastern rivers to rise quickly due to strong rains and dam releases upstream.
Sutlej and Ravi Rivers on Alert
The Sutlej River is already flowing at a high rate of 253,068 cusecs and may surge up to 300,000 cusecs in the coming days. At Jasarr, the Ravi River is currently at 60,094 cusecs, but officials warn it could reach 150,000 cusecs because of incoming rain and releases from the Thane Dam. Tributaries such as Nalah Ben, Basantar, and Dek are also at risk.
Chenab River and Tributaries Under Threat
The Chenab River is flowing at 94,728 cusecs at Marala, but expected rainfall and water discharge from dams in Jammu and Kashmir—Salal, Baglihar, and Dal Hasti—may cause a rapid rise. Tributaries including Jammu Tawi, Manwar Tawi, and Palkhu face potential flooding.
Possible Damage to Low-Lying Areas
NDMA has cautioned that low-lying regions, farmland, and riverbanks could suffer heavy losses. Risks include embankment breaches, crop damage, and displacement of local communities. Farmers and residents have been urged to stay alert and adopt precautionary measures.
Emergency Measures and Public Advisory
On the Prime Minister’s directives, NDMA is monitoring the situation and supervising rescue and relief efforts. Its National Emergency Operations Center is active 24/7, coordinating with civil and military teams.
Authorities have advised residents to move away from riverbanks and flood-prone areas without delay. People should prepare emergency kits with food, water, medical supplies, and important documents. Citizens are also urged to cooperate with evacuation teams, avoid unnecessary travel, and follow the guidance of local administration during emergencies.
