Protest and Business Impact
Lush closed its UK shops, factories, and website, including the flagship spa on Oxford Street in London. Posters on shop windows read “Stop starving Gaza, we are closed in solidarity”. Google Maps marked the store as temporarily closed. The cosmetics retailer expects estimated losses of about £300,000, but co-founder Mark Constantine told LBC radio the decision prioritized principles over profits. He said he wanted to send food to Gaza rather than just sacrifice financially. I have seen similar bold campaigns by ethical brands. They always earn public trust and respect.
Ethical Stands and Past Campaigns
The luxury cosmetics brand has a history of social action. It launched the #Spycops campaign in 2018, exposing undercover police officers. In 2021, it boycotted social media apps over negative effects on teenagers’ body image. Its fundraising product, Watermelon Slice soap, became the most successful single fundraising product, with profits supporting mental health services for Palestinian children. The company also sent cheques to direct action climate campaigning groups, including RoadBlock and Clear the Skies. Although it removed a Boycott Israel poster from a Dublin store shopfront in October 2023, the ethos “All Are Welcome. Always.” remained central. In branding, balancing activism and messaging is key.
Political and Social Repercussions
The PA news agency confirmed staff would be paid for the closure day. A prime minister statement hinted the UK might recognize a Palestinian state in September, if Israel addressed the humanitarian crisis, agreed to a ceasefire, and advanced a two-state solution. In the House of Commons on Monday, foreign secretary David Lammy told MPs that Gaza faces a manmade famine as the war continues. The UK government also lost a day of tax contributions from Lush. This shows how activism and commerce are intertwined. Companies now face death, destruction, and anxiety in the Middle East directly.
