Knee Cancer Surgery Karachi: Jinnah Hospital Achieves Historic Milestone

Doctors at Jinnah Hospital, Karachi, achieved a historic medical milestone by performing the hospital’s first-ever knee cancer surgery Karachi. As a result, a 26-year-old patient regained mobility after surgeons removed a tumor and implanted an artificial knee.

Dr. Farukh, part of the surgical team, explained that the patient had developed cancer in the knee and lower leg. Therefore, a joint team of orthopedic and plastic surgeons carried out a complex four-hour procedure. The surgery removed the tumor completely and replaced the damaged joint with a prosthetic knee.

Moreover, post-operative tests confirmed that the cancer was fully removed. The hospital also provided the artificial knee—worth between Rs1 million and Rs1.1 million—free of cost. Globally, such implants function effectively for 20–25 years, which ensures long-term mobility for patients. In addition, the entire procedure, valued at Rs3.5 million, was conducted without charging the patient.

The orthopedic team included Dr. Farukh, Dr. Muzaffar, Dr. Wali, Dr. Shahid, and Dr. Khushal. Meanwhile, the plastic surgery team featured Dr. Agha Waseem, Dr. Mehak, Dr. Komal, and Dr. Farooq.

Pakistan’s Breakthrough in Breast Cancer Prevention

In a separate achievement, Pakistan reached another milestone by developing a breast cancer prevention vaccine. The Institute of Public Health Punjab created the vaccine and, consequently, is preparing for large-scale production of the Human Papillomavirus (HPV) vaccine.

Punjab Finance Minister Mujtaba Shuja praised the initiative and highlighted the government’s focus on healthcare advancements. Furthermore, Prof. Dr. Javed Akram explained that three doses given to girls aged 12 can provide lifelong protection against breast cancer. Therefore, the initiative marks a major step forward in women’s health in Pakistan.
