Federal Minister for Finance and Revenue, Senator Muhammad Aurangzeb, led the second meeting of the Steering Committee on Inflationary Trends in Pakistan. He said that inflation control in Pakistan is a top priority. The goal is to protect vulnerable and low-income families, especially those recovering from the recent floods.
The Committee reviewed the Sensitive Price Index (SPI) and tracked essential food items. They checked the prices of onions, tomatoes, rice, wheat, sugar, and edible oil. Officials also discussed supply challenges, stock levels, and the import situation for basic commodities. Wheat reserves, excluding strategic stockpiles, are currently sufficient. Early assessments showed that damage to rice and sugarcane crops remains manageable.
The Finance Minister urged authorities to stop market speculation and artificial price hikes. He also called for stronger monitoring systems. The meeting stressed the need for timely seeds and agricultural inputs for the next sowing season. NDMA, SUPARCO, and the Pakistan Bureau of Statistics will work with provincial governments to carry out accurate crop damage assessments.
Senior officials from several divisions and organizations attended, including the State Bank of Pakistan and the Sustainable Development Policy Institute (SDPI). The Steering Committee will meet again next week to review progress. They plan to adopt more steps to stabilize prices and support citizens.
Through strict oversight and proactive planning, the government aims to improve inflation control in Pakistan and protect the purchasing power of its people.
