The news of Engineer Mirza Arrest Pakistan shocked millions of his followers. The popular cleric and YouTuber is known for his outspoken lectures on religion and society. This time, however, his alleged blasphemous remarks led Jhelum police to arrest him, sparking outrage both online and offline.
The Arrest and Legal Basis
Police detained Engineer Muhammad Ali Mirza under Section 3 of the Maintenance of Public Order (MPO) ordinance. Authorities issued a 30-day detention order after a religious group complained about controversial references to Prophet Muhammad in one of his videos.
After the arrest, officers moved Mirza to jail. Pakistani media outlets, including Dawn and Such TV, quickly covered the story.
The MPO itself has faced strong criticism. Since its introduction in 1960, governments have used it to silence dissent. Human Rights Watch and Amnesty International argue that its vague language leaves the law open to abuse.
Reaction and Public Backlash
The move sparked immediate debate. Lahore-based lawyer J Sajjal Shaheedi argued that the decision was more about silencing critics than maintaining peace.
“The arrest of Engineer Muhammad Ali Mirza is not about public order. It is about silencing voices that challenge sectarian clergy,” she posted on X.
Furthermore, she highlighted Pakistan’s double standards. Groups like Tehreek-e-Labbaik Pakistan (TLP), which often block roads, clash with police, and hold the state hostage, usually escape meaningful punishment.
A Cleric Surrounded by Controversy
The arrest adds to Mirza’s long list of disputes and challenges. Over the years, he has become one of the most polarizing clerics in Pakistan.
- Sectarian Debates: His views on Mu’awiya I angered many traditionalist Sunni scholars. In 2021, his debate challenge with Deobandi scholar Mufti Tariq Masood turned into a national spectacle.
- Blasphemy Allegations: In April 2023, police registered a case under Section 295C of the Pakistan Penal Code. They accused him of insulting Prophet Muhammad and softening his stance on Ahmadis.
- Banned Speeches: During Muharram 2024, Jhelum authorities banned him and 16 other clerics from delivering speeches to prevent sectarian unrest.
- Assassination Attempts: Mirza survived at least four attempts on his life, including one at a religious academy in 2021.
- Previous Arrests: In 2020, Jhelum police arrested him for derogatory remarks against certain religious figures.
As a result of these incidents, Mirza has remained in constant conflict with mainstream clerics and authorities.
Why This Arrest Matters
Over time, Mirza has built a reputation as an independent religious voice. He openly challenges sectarian leaders and refuses to align with state-backed clerics. Consequently, his arrest raises serious questions about freedom of expression in Pakistan.
Moreover, critics believe laws like the MPO are applied selectively. While outspoken reformists face detention, violent groups often receive leniency. This inconsistency fuels mistrust and deepens divisions between citizens, clerics, and the state.
In the end, the arrest of Engineer Mirza shows Pakistan’s ongoing struggle. The country continues to wrestle with the balance between religious authority, state power, and free speech. Supporters view him as a reformist voice, while opponents label him a threat. Either way, his case highlights the deep conflict between tradition and reform in Pakistani society.
