Early Life and Legacy
Dr. James Dobson death has been confirmed at the age of 89, marking the end of a remarkable life devoted to Christian faith and family values.
The James Dobson Family Institute (JDFI) announced his passing on Thursday morning. They described him as a man committed to guiding families and influencing culture through biblical principles.
Born in Shreveport, Louisiana, in 1936, Dobson dedicated his career to strengthening marriages, parenting, and faith-based living.

Rise to National Influence
In the 1980s, Dobson became a major figure in American politics. He worked alongside Jerry Falwell and Pat Robertson to promote conservative Christian ideals.
Gary Bauer, Senior Vice President of Public Policy at JDFI, stated: “Dr. Dobson was a pioneer whose convictions shaped how generations view faith and culture.”
As a result, his influence stretched far beyond church communities and into American society.
Focus on the Family Ministry
Dobson founded Focus on the Family in 1977 in Arcadia, California. Later, in 1991, the ministry relocated to Colorado Springs, where it remains headquartered today.
Under his leadership, the daily Focus on the Family radio program became one of the most widely broadcasted Christian shows. It aired on more than 4,000 stations, reaching over 160 countries and translated into 27 languages.
Later Career and Publications
After leaving Focus in 2010, he established the James Dobson Family Institute to continue his teaching. This allowed him to focus more directly on his broadcasts and mentoring.
Dobson authored more than 70 books, including The New Dare to Discipline and When God Doesn’t Make Sense. These remain staple resources in many Christian homes.
In addition, he was honored as a New York Times bestselling author and inducted into the Radio Hall of Fame.
Advisor to U.S. Presidents
Dobson’s leadership extended to politics, where he advised five U.S. presidents: Ronald Reagan, George H. W. Bush, George W. Bush, Bill Clinton, and Donald Trump.
In 2016, he served on President Trump’s Evangelical Executive Advisory Board, providing counsel on evangelical concerns.
Advocacy and Core Beliefs
Throughout his career, Dobson campaigned to preserve family values and the sanctity of life. He strongly opposed abortion and pornography, while warning that redefining marriage would undermine traditional family structures.
Because of his strong voice, the Dr. James Dobson death is seen as a significant loss to Christian communities worldwide.
Family and Survivors
He is survived by his wife of 64 years, Shirley, their children Danae and Ryan, daughter-in-law Laura, and two grandchildren.
