The Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) has released new guidance on backdated cost of living payments, offering clarity to those who believe they should have received support but did not.
Between 2022 and 2024, the government provided one-off cost of living support payments to help households manage soaring energy bills and rising inflation. However, the DWP has confirmed that no additional payments will be issued in 2025.
Challenging a Missing Payment
According to the updated notice on the GOV.UK website, a computerised system was used to decide who qualified for previous payments. If you feel you were eligible but did not receive support, you can:
- Contact the office that pays your benefit directly.
- Request an explanation of how the decision was made.
- Provide additional information that could change the outcome.
This process applies to people on means-tested benefits, such as Universal Credit and Tax Credits, as well as disability and pension-related benefits.
Who Can Claim Cost of Living Payments?
The DWP and HMRC previously issued several types of payments, including:
- Low-income payments for those on means-tested benefits.
- Disability payments for people receiving disability benefits.
- Pensioner payments for individuals above State Pension age.
A full list of qualifying criteria is available on the GOV.UK website.
Other Ways to Boost Your Income
While no new cost of living payments are planned for 2025, households may still qualify for other forms of financial help:
- Council Tax Reduction – People on a low income in Scotland could save up to £850 a year.
- Pension Credit – Older people on a low income may be entitled to an average yearly boost of £4,300. Even a small award can unlock other benefits.
- Disability Support – Adults may qualify for Personal Independence Payment (PIP), while those over State Pension age could claim Attendance Allowance.
How to Check Eligibility
The quickest way to see what support you might be entitled to is by using a free online benefits calculator. These tools are confidential and can help you estimate:
- Which benefits you may be eligible for.
- How much you could receive.
- The impact of changes in your work or financial situation.
Alternatively, claims for benefits such as Pension Credit can be made directly online or through dedicated helplines. Independent organisations like Age UK, Citizens Advice, and Independent Age also offer free guidance.
Final Thoughts
Although the government has ended one-off cost of living payments in 2025, many households may still be missing out on valuable financial support. Taking a few minutes to check for unclaimed benefits could provide a meaningful income boost and ease financial pressure in the months ahead.
