Amari Cooper’s second stint with the Raiders has come to an end after the wide receiver announced his retirement on Thursday. While the decision was surprising, Las Vegas is not expected to make major changes to its offensive plan.
Offensive coordinator Chip Kelly shared his thoughts during a press conference, describing Cooper as a talented player with an impressive career.
“He called Pete [Carroll] this morning and had a good conversation. I think he’s just done playing,” Kelly said. “It’s unfortunate because I think the world of him. He’s a heck of a football player with a heck of a career. But he knows in his heart what he wants to do, so I wish him the best.”
Raiders Still Confident in Offense
Kelly emphasized that the Raiders’ receiving group remains strong, particularly with veteran quarterback Geno Smith leading the offense. He highlighted Jakobi Meyers’ experience and the depth at the tight end position as reasons for optimism.
“With a veteran quarterback, it’s different than if you had only young wideouts and a rookie running back,” Kelly explained. “Some positions you feel really good about, while others take real game experience to prove themselves. That’s what excites me — seeing the young guys step up.”
A Respected Career
While the Amari Cooper retirement news ends his short return with the Raiders, Kelly expressed deep respect for the wide receiver’s contributions to the game and wished him success beyond football.
