The Provincial Disaster Management Authority (PDMA) has warned of a fresh flood threat in Punjab, with more than 70,000 cusecs of water expected to flow in from India in the coming days.
During a press conference in Lahore, PDMA Director General Irfan Ali Kathia said heavy rains have lashed several areas. Gujrat and Mandi Bahauddin recorded the heaviest downpours in the past 24 hours.
“At Ganda Singh Wala, water levels dropped slightly after a dam breach in India. However, high floods continue at Head Sulemanki and Head Islam,” he said.
Currently, 175,000 cusecs are passing through Head Marala. In Chiniot, water peaked above 800,000 cusecs before receding to 650,000. To protect Jhang city, authorities breached embankments and prevented large-scale destruction. A massive 830,000 cusecs is expected at Trimu. Rising water levels in the Ravi and Sutlej rivers now threaten nearby settlements.
At Head Muhammad Wala, converging waters may reach 700,000–800,000 cusecs, forcing further embankment breaches. Kathia said precautionary measures are being taken on a large scale. More than 800 boats and 13,000 rescue workers, assisted by the Pakistan Army, are active in rescue operations.
So far, floods have impacted 966,000 people along the Chenab, 232,000 along the Ravi, and 313,000 along the Sutlej. Hundreds of relief camps are running, and in Lahore alone, 6,000–7,000 people are receiving food and shelter.
At least 30 people have died, mostly from accidental causes. Kathia also highlighted the absence of an information-sharing system with India. He stressed that rehabilitation efforts will follow after rescue operations.
“Despite federal efforts, we do not receive timely updates from across the border. Once rescue work ends, we will ensure full rehabilitation for all victims,” he said.
