Major Auto Safety Reforms Begin
Starting in October, Pakistan will implement 57 international safety benchmarks on locally manufactured cars. This move, tied to IMF commitments, marks a turning point for the local auto sector. At present, only 17 safety rules exist. Therefore, the new framework will align the Pakistan car safety standards with global practices and improve consumer protection.
Establishment of Automotive Institute
To enforce reforms effectively, the government will set up the Pakistan Automotive Institute. This body will monitor and certify locally produced auto parts. In addition, the import policy is changing. From September 30, authorities will ban “Type-D” accidental vehicles and unverified new cars. Local manufacturers must also obtain licenses directly from their headquarters to confirm vehicle quality.
Stricter Oversight and Penalties
The Engineering Development Board (EDB) will regulate licenses for all imports and sales. Moreover, automakers will have a legal duty to recall defective vehicles or faulty parts. If they fail to comply, they could face fines and up to three years in prison. The government has also passed laws on dumping control and local manufacturing. As a result, consumers and the domestic industry will enjoy stronger protections.
Long-Term Regulatory Overhaul
From 2025 onward, every new vehicle in Pakistan will fall under the Motor Vehicle Industry Development Act 2025. This law represents a complete shift in how the sector operates. Ultimately, the Pakistan car safety standards reform not only safeguards buyers but also strengthens the foundation of the auto industry for long-term growth.
