Spotify has introduced Spotify In App Messages, a new feature designed to make music and podcast sharing more interactive. With this update, listeners can chat about songs, podcasts, and audiobooks without leaving the platform. This move marks Spotify’s push into blending streaming with social experiences.
How the Feature Works
The update is rolling out this week for both free and Premium users who are 16 or older, starting in select markets. Currently, it is available only on mobile devices.
Messages act like private one-on-one chats rather than group conversations. When listening to content, users can tap the share button, choose a contact, and send it directly. If it’s a first-time interaction, the request goes to the recipient’s inbox, similar to Instagram’s message requests. After approval, users can exchange texts, react with emojis, and keep the discussion alive around their favorite content.
Easy Access to Conversations
The Messages tab sits under the profile photo in the top-left corner of the app. Spotify also suggests contacts based on shared playlists, Jams, Blends, or family and duo plans. This feature makes it simple to find people you already connect with musically.
Privacy and Control
Spotify assures users that all chats are encrypted. However, automated systems may still scan messages for harmful or illegal content. Importantly, the feature is optional—listeners can disable it anytime and continue sharing music through other platforms like WhatsApp, Instagram, or Telegram.
Why It Matters
With Messages, Spotify aims to keep users within its ecosystem for longer. By combining streaming with social interaction, the platform could reshape how people discover, share, and talk about music.
Summary
Spotify has rolled out the Spotify In App Messages feature, enabling users to share and discuss music, podcasts, and audiobooks directly inside the app. Available on mobile for users aged 16+, the tool offers private, encrypted chats with emoji reactions and message requests.
