Islamabad: The National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) has sounded the alarm over extraordinary flooding in the Chenab, Ravi, and Sutlej Rivers, urging immediate evacuation from vulnerable areas. The warning came on Tuesday from the NDMA’s National Emergency Operation Centre (NEOC), which highlighted a dangerous surge in river water levels.
Chenab River – Rising Danger
According to the NEOC, an extremely high flood wave of 690,000 cusecs is currently passing through Marala Headworks on the Chenab River. Authorities expect water levels to rise further in the coming hours, intensifying the flood threat.
Ravi River – Areas at Risk
Meanwhile, the Ravi River at Jassar is carrying a high flood of 170,000 cusecs, with projections showing it may surge to 250,000 cusecs by morning. Low-lying areas including Shahdara, Park View, and Motorway-II face imminent risk of inundation.
Sutlej River – Exceptionally High Flood
The Sutlej River at Ganda Singh Wala is also experiencing an exceptionally high flood wave of 245,000 cusecs, with a further increase anticipated. This poses a grave threat to nearby settlements and agricultural lands.
Evacuation and Safety Measures
The NEOC has directed residents living close to riverbanks and waterways to relocate immediately to safer locations. People are urged to strictly follow local authorities’ instructions and coordinate with rescue teams in case of emergency.
In addition, authorities have advised citizens to:
- Avoid non-essential travel to flood-affected regions.
- Prepare emergency kits with food, clean water, and medicines.
- Secure important documents and valuables in waterproof bags.
For real-time alerts and safety guidance, the NDMA encouraged citizens to download and use the NDMA Disaster Alert mobile application.
