Punjab Flood Crisis Update as Rivers Overflow in Punjab
Authorities have issued a Punjab flood crisis update warning after relentless monsoon rains, glacial melt, and water releases from India’s dams pushed rivers to dangerous levels. Nearly 190,000 people have already been evacuated, with the military assisting in rescue operations. Officials caution that the next 72 hours will be critical as rainfall and dam discharges intensify.
Rising Water Levels Across Punjab
The Rivers Chenab, Ravi, and Sutlej are surging at alarming rates, threatening Punjab’s agricultural heartland. At Marala Headworks, inflows on the Chenab passed 400,000 cusecs and may rise further, while the Ravi and Sutlej are also swelling under pressure. India’s Pong and Bhakra dams have reached critical capacity, raising the risk of further releases downstream.
Evacuation and Relief Efforts
The National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) and Punjab’s PDMA are carrying out large-scale evacuations, relocating residents from high-risk zones. Army units and local administrations are setting up relief camps, ensuring food, medicines, and sanitation for displaced families. Officials report that timely evacuations have so far prevented fatalities in the worst-hit districts.
Government Response and Warnings
Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has directed authorities to accelerate rescue and relief operations, including the provision of tents, food, and medical supplies. The Pakistan Meteorological Department warns of continued heavy rains, which could trigger further flooding in Punjab and nearby regions. Citizens are urged to stay vigilant, avoid low-lying areas, and follow official advisories.
