Pakistan U23 Squad Reduced to 27 as Solano Gears Up for Asian Cup Qualifiers

Pakistan’s preparations for the AFC U23 Asian Cup Qualifiers moved forward with the training camp in Islamabad, producing a shortlist of 27 players. The initial pool included 50 names, but only 27 remain. Before departing for the qualifiers, the squad will be cut further to 23.

Goalkeepers Adam Khan, Hassan, and Umair secured their spots, while outfield players such as Ahmed Salman, Hamza Munir, Haroon Hamid, and Ali Raza also survived the cut. In addition, diaspora players like Mckeal Abdullah bring depth and international experience to the side.

The Pakistan U23 Asian Cup Qualifiers will be the first challenge for new head coach Nolberto Solano. The former Peruvian international and Newcastle United star now oversees both the U23 and junior teams. He aims to instill discipline, improve tactical awareness, and strengthen team unity. Pakistan has often struggled at this level, so Solano’s approach focuses on long-term growth as well as short-term results.

Pakistan faces a tough Group G in the qualifiers. They will compete against Cambodia, Iraq, and Oman—three nations with strong youth programs and proven records in regional tournaments. Pakistan has never qualified for the U23 Asian Cup, so advancing this year remains a difficult task.

However, Solano views the campaign as more than a competition. For him, these qualifiers provide an opportunity to build a foundation for the future. By testing young players against top regional opponents, he hopes to prepare them for bigger challenges and push Pakistan football closer to its long-term ambitions.
