In case you have ever done online shopping in Pakistan, you may have noticed how AliExpress Pakistan Tax Policy has begun to charge tax at the point of check out and this is a situation that has raised a lot of noise among online shoppers in Pakistan. I was recently about to order a small item worth of $36.96 on the Chinese e-commerce site and surprisingly, taxes were charged amounting to 25.87 making my purchase of 62.83 which is more than 70 percent higher. This abrupt increase is causing repeated online shoppers to reconsider cheap foreign small products.
A 5% digital presence tax on foreign e-commerce sites, such as AliExpress and Temu was also previously introduced by the federal government and then withdrawn. Irrespective of the roll back, AliExpress still has its buyers listed with individual amounts of tax on them, especially with small cross-border imports. I would personally state that it is rather shocking and annoying to see taxes in the checkout page per item.
The governments have emphasized that tax net is to raise the source of collection of taxes to restrain unregulated cross-border trade and to raise domestic revenue. According to the analysts, this new system would deter small online shopping activities in foreign countries and force customers into the domestic markets. In my case, these changes are more pronounced among regular consumers who use imported products as a personal consumption.
Interestingly, AliExpress actively implements the process of separate charges of tax, but Temu has not shown any visible element of taxes at the checkout for Pakistani customers. Observers in the industry also point out that this disparity may develop a buyer preference where AliExpress appears more rigid and expensive than the rest of the foreign e-commerce platforms might seem more relaxed.
This move by the government had been retroactively in effect as of July 1 2025 and the rules had been applied to goods and services supplied outside Pakistan. In my opinion, this time is premature to Pakistani web-based shoppers, as the sudden increase of checkout amounts impacts their budgeting plans and interferes with e-business habits.
To make the matter worse, AliExpress has not made any official comment, which makes buyers clueless about the rationale behind different tax amounts and tax breakdowns. In my recent few orders, I noticed that at the bottom of the checkout screen, the word Tax was written clearly and how taxes on the individual products were higher than what I expected which could increase the value of the product significantly.
The effect on Real Economy of Pakistan which has been estimated by Finance Minister of Pakistani economic system at $1 Trillion, is yet to be completely assessed. Exports of e-commerce around the globe are a major factor and there is a challenge of creating a smooth balance between local revenues and cheap online purchases. In the meantime, these new system challenges require buyers to work around them with caution in order not to face overcharging.
To everyone who handles orders via AliExpress, it is possible to track additions on tax, history of 5% levy, and compare it with other service providers such as Temu, making it possible to reduce the number of surprises and manage costs efficiently. Being a person who often imports small cross-border items, I have understood that the knowledge of the existence of taxes at checkout is as significant as testability of the quality of goods.
