Punjab has marked a major milestone in modernizing its licensing system with the launch of Pakistan’s first AI Driving Test Car, introduced under the guidance of Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif.
This innovative smart vehicle, designed and developed by the Traffic Police, aims to make the driving license process fully transparent, automated, and free from human interference. According to DIG Traffic Waqas Nazir, the car is equipped with advanced cameras and sensors that automatically evaluate candidates’ performance during the test.
Inside the car, a biometric fingerprint scanner and facial recognition system authenticate candidates before the test begins. The system also provides instructions, a countdown timer, and verifies essential safety features such as the seatbelt and handbrake. Meanwhile, four external cameras record driving behavior to ensure complete fairness.
One standout feature is its ability to instantly declare a failure if critical errors occur—for example, if a candidate engages reverse gear more than once. All results are updated in real-time without the need for manual input.
Initially, the AI-driven system will be deployed in Lahore, with 200 such vehicles planned for rollout across Punjab during the current fiscal year. Authorities believe this step will revolutionize how driving tests are conducted in Pakistan, making them more efficient and unbiased.
The introduction of the AI Driving Test Car reflects Punjab’s commitment to innovation and public safety while setting a new benchmark for modernized licensing systems in the region.
